Researchers Prepare a Study on How Cannabis-like Molecules May influence Obesity
Scientists from the University of California, Riverside have received a $1.7 million grant to study the cannabis-like molecules in the body that help control feeding behaviors. Researchers hope to find the specific components in the Western diet, comprised of high sugar and fat, that impact gut-brain signaling and diet-induced obesity.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Endocannabinoids are cannabis-like molecules that are naturally produced by the body to aid in the regulation of a wide variety of physiological processes.
- Contrary to the stereotypical idea that cannabis leads to weight gain, a growing body of scientific research has revealed a link between cannabis use and lower obesity rates.
- In 2017, researchers from Oregon’s Health and Science University published a study that found regular cannabis use to be associated with a lower body fat percentage.
