More Pregnant Women are Using Marijuana

A new study reveals marijuana use by pregnant women in the U.S. has doubled in the last 20 years, prompting researchers to call for more information.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • A new survey on women in US finds women using marijuana while pregnant more than doubled from 2002-2017.
  • Most pregnant women are not obtaining their marijuana through their state’s respective medical marijuana program.
  • Almost all cannabis use during pregnancy appeared to have been pursued without a doctor’s recommendation. However, pregnant women were found to obtain and use marijuana with guidance from a physician just as often as non-pregnant women.
  • A Washington University School of Medicine research study found that when used without tobacco or other drugs, marijuana showed no significant risks on infant’s weight or preterm delivery.
  • Scientists have emphasized the need for additional research to evaluate the potential impacts of prenatal cannabis exposure on unborn children.
